The Big Music Project

Hackney Live presents

Hello and welcome to Hackney Live presents The Big Music Project. This was Hackney’s local version of the nationwide The Big Music Project, which aims to help young people aged 14-24 navigate a route into music. It is supported by Young Hackney, Big Lottery Fund, UK Youth and Capital FM, as well as a host of famous ambassadors like Plan B, Ellie Goulding and MNEK. Presenting the show were our own local heroes: singing sensations Jermain Jackman and Aisha Peters.

Five top young performing artists took to the stage backed by a house band in a 30-minute broadcast of some of the best Hackney has to offer: singer-songwriters La Braya, Mychelle and Josh Tenor, rapper SNE and lyrical wordsmith Tolu.

Act 1: SNE

SNE (Sound Never Ends) is from East London, with dominant Jamaican roots and strong Grime influences. He creates his own distinctive sound with witty punch lines and intricate word play, whist displaying his range in vocal ability.

Between 2009 and 2011, SNE gained reputation as ‘Sneako’, a member of the Grime collective “S.O.S.” (Sound Of The Streets), performing at the BBC and well-known stages such as BiggaFish, Hackney Empire and the O2.

Now a solo artist, SNE has released two well received projects thus far, in the shape of ‘SN13’ and ‘I.O.U’. SNE has regained the spotlight with his recent offerings, and plans to reveal his intentions for 2015 through release of his forthcoming ‘Essence’ mixtape.

The release of his latest tracks and videos: ‘S of Spades’ and ‘Like Us’ created a massive buzz, making him Jamal Edwards from SBTV’s third favourite rapper. His songs have been on SBTV, Grimedaily and the Mobo awards website, making him an artist to watch out for in the UK rap scene.* |*

Act 2: La Braya

La Braya is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from East London. She grew up listening to various soulful artists such as Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Bilge and Destiny’s Child.

As she grew older, other artists such as Florence & the Machine, Adele, Daughter, Jessie J and JP Cooper began to influence her, and are just some of the artists La Braya has come to strongly appreciate. Her latest project (Cover Season) sees La Braya covering 4 original songs with her distinctive subtle sound making them her own.* |*

Act 3: Josh Tenor

Josh Tenor is a 14 year old singer/songwriter from East London. His been singing since he could speak, and playing guitar for four years. He wants to people to react to his music the same way people react to the likes of Michael Jackson’s music. He has started creating a solid fan base.

Since 2013, He has been noticed by famous faces e.g. Jermain Jackman and Chase and Status’ MC Rage. His ambition is to have recognition for his music and to potentially tour the UK. He was a finalist of Alter Ego Hackney 2015.* |

Act 4: Mychelle

Mychelle is a 19 year old singer-songwriter who resides in Hackney. She is currently studying a three-year music course at a Music institute in Brighton. She cites Amy Winehouse as one of her main influences; however, she likes and appreciates elements from many other artists across different genres.

Mychelle says her original work inspired by these many musical elements makes it hard to explain and be put in a box. She aims to inspire others.* |*

Act 5: Tolu

Hailing from Hackney, Tolu enters the new year with a refreshingly mellow track by the name of ‘Low battery’ produced by Australia’s very own Ta-Bio.

The 19 year old poet-turned-rapper hopes to make a firm and clear stamp on the game this year with more releases illustrating just the kind of artist that he is.

With an EP on the horizon, and shows up and down the UK it sounds like the insightful Londoner has a lot to get off his chest. Drawing influences from the likes of Kanye West, Andre 3000 and many more, he aims to bring something different to the table. He says: “the ideas and creations I’ve been brewing over for many years are starting to come into fruition, and I think the people and I are both ready for it”* |*
